Mark Webber on Life after F1 and the WEC

2 min read

Mark Webber was the first Australian since Alan Jones to win a Grand Prix when he triumphed in Germany in 2009. That closed a 28-year gap of winning Aussies after Jones' last victory at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in 1981. Webber went on to win eight more Grands Prix and step on the Formula 1 podium a total of 42 times. Phase two of his career came in 2014 with Porsche and racing the 919 to victory eight times and the World Endurance Championship in 2015. Still with Porsche, Mark Webber sat down with us to take a look back at his career and what he’s up to today.

Autoweek: What is your role with Porsche these days? Brand Ambassador is the title, but what does that mean exactly?

Mark Webber: Well, I’m endorsing the product, or products, plural, which is not much of a chore, to be honest, because I was buying Porsches before I was with Porsche. But my remit is a bit wider than that because of my passion for the brand; I am involved in motorsport because of my experience. I like to help where I can. I’m a performance guy, I like to put performance into our vehicles. And gluing. We’re such an international company, I think it’s nice from a racing side to glue different cultures together. Clearly, its German origins. And it’s the most successful sports car brand around, a phenomenal brand. We are international as well and I’m really enjoying that component of gluing what regions I can.
