McLaren 720S vs. 1,150-hp Hellcat is closer than you’d expect

4 min read

At first glance, the Mclaren 720S and a modified Dodge Challenger Hellcat with 300 extra horses are not that evenly matched. About the only things they have in common are that they each have four wheels, two doors, eight cylinders and rear-wheel drive. But how would they fare in a head-to-head race with a rolling start, accelerating from 45 mph to 160 mph?

Let's sum up the details of these two beasts first. The Hellcat in question has been modified with a Whipple 4.5 supercharger, Manley rods, Diamond pistons, a Fore triple pump system and Thitek heads. The Hellcat has also received a modified exhaust system and aluminum driveshaft, among other changes. The result is an output of 1,150 hp, or about 977 hp at the wheels.

The McLaren 720S in this experiment is completely stock, powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 producing 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. But it should still have a few advantages in this race, aside from the fact that it weighs over 1,200 pounds less.

But which one will outpace the other from a rolling start?

Grab some popcorn and watch the results.

To be honest, we didn't expect them to be this close, but the official results (posted at the 9:00-minute mark in the video) detail just how evenly the two cars are matched in this contest.

We'd like to think that it's mostly the lighter weight of the McLaren that makes the difference here in addition to many other factors — that's a lot of metal for the Hellcat to haul around — but the Hellcat compensates nicely with a beefier engine. Admittedly, it's not hard to picture the Hellcat having gulped down a 1-liter soda bottle's worth of fuel just during this sprint alone. There's no replacement for displacement, but 997 hp at the wheels does not come cheap on the morning commute.
