Let's face it: The stock Volkswagen Vanagon DoKa utility vans and their brethren have a great look, but they seem a little limp on paper. This means an engine swap if you're the DIY type, with plenty of engines in the VW family to choose from.
The builder of this Tristar looked outside the family in revamping this truck: A Subaru EJ257 2.4-liter flat-four engine sourced from a 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STI now lives under the cargo bed, which is rated at 305 hp in the STI. When this TriStar was for sale in Portland last year, the seller claimed the output had been dialed up to 375 hp, with all that power sent to the rear wheels via a Porsche G50 five-speed manual transmission. Thanks to the (mostly) sturdy construction of the T3 TriStar, this thing was not ripped apart at the first red light it encountered, and thankfully the brakes had also been beefed up, sourced from a 993 Turbo along with the wheels.
The Porsche wheels and the Hella lights, along with the hard-to-miss exterior color, give away the game, though we probably would not have guessed that a WRX STI engine hid under the bed unless we listened to it idle and drove around for half an hour (we're available for that anytime, though).
