‘Every president has a sell-by date.’
The “Morning Joe” host, friendly toward if not always aligned with Donald Trump, was expounding, he said, on a belief that each commander-in-chief, from Washington to Obama and now Trump as well, has reached a point where the public becomes jaded or disillusioned or merely immune to his preferred messaging.
Trump, according to the former Republican congressman from the Florida Panhandle, has been on an accelerated schedule. His evidence derived, he said on Tuesday’s show, from telephone conversations with a few handfuls of Republican friends from his home state. In previous rounds of phone calls, he reported, those friends had virtually all professed steadfast support for Trump, whom they’d backed in the Nov. 8 election over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. In calls over recent days, said Scarborough, those same people are saying they’ve tuned out the president entirely. “Wait a second,” they’re now asking, he reported. “Why am I fighting for this guy?”
Scarborough co-host Mika Brzezinski offered the alternative theory, based on elevated TV ratings and other factors, that voters are not tuning Trump out but tuning in more intently, and that that, too, has not positively impacted Trump’s poll numbers.
