Trump makes puzzling statements in pair of policy tweets

President Donald Trump unleashed a flurry of tweets Sunday as he returned from his first overseas trip as president, culminating with a pair that appear to contradict or overstate White House plans.

Trump tweeted 10 times as of 11:30 p.m. Sunday, with five of those addressing so-called “fake news.” He sent a pair of tweets about policy Sunday night, saying in one, “I suggest that we add more dollars to Healthcare and make it the best anywhere.”

That suggestion was puzzling, though, since the budget plan submitted last week by the White House calls for cutting $616 billion in future Medicaid spending, $250 billion in spending cuts through the Obamacare repeal, as well as cuts for low-income children’s health care. It does not include any new health-care spending.

In another tweet Sunday night, Trump boasted his tax reform plan he has submitted “is moving along in the process very well, actually ahead of schedule.”

That appears to overstate things, since no comprehensive tax plan has been proposed by either Trump or Congress. Trump’s tax plan has not been formally submitted to Congress, and the outline that has been released is just a single page of bullet points that lacks details. The plan has also been described differently by the Trump administration, with the president and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin describing it as a massive tax cut, while White House budget chief Mitch Mulvaney said it would eliminate tax breaks and deductions to offset lower tax rates — suggesting the administration has yet to decide on a final plan.

A border adjustment tax also appears to be a major sticking point between the White House and the Republican-led Congress. Last week House Speaker Paul Ryan reportedly was refusing to back off a tax on imports, which the White House has rejected. The week before, though, Ryan said he was confident that differences over the tax plan could be patched over, and a sweeping tax reform plan could be passed by year’s end.

In what appeared to be his last tweet of the night, Trump criticized the “fake news media” for “disparaging & demeaning” his use of social media “because they don’t want America to hear the real story.”
