Jacob Staudenmaier isn’t exactly Ryan Gosling’s doppelganger, but he’s been told he looks like the actor enough to pull off an especially appropriate kind of ask — a promposal of the Emma Stone variety.
It’s fitting that Staudenmaier’s promposal — a “will you go to prom with me” video that pulls out all the stops, like some wedding proposals — is focused on Stone, since the actress is a native of Arizona.
The Arizona teen’s promposal is modeled on the opening scene of “La La Land,” Princeton-bred director Damien Chazelle’s feted movie musical, for which he won the Oscar for best director (before the movie was mistakenly given the award for best picture). Stone and Gosling play the two leads, artist-dreamers trying to make it in Hollywood.
The scene, set to the song “Another Day of Sun,” plays out in gridlock on a Los Angeles freeway ramp. Staudenmaier filmed his promposal between rows of cars, with sign-carrying students filling in for the dancers.
Staudenmaier, who will be attending the junior prom at Arcadia High School in Phoenix later this month, wears a tux (to look like Awards Show Ryan Gosling) and sings along to the same melody with new, prom-focused lyrics and flashes props, like Oscar statuettes.
“I need a date to prom,” he starts. “I should have done it earlier/But now I’ll sing this song.”
“Please don’t let me down,” he continues. “It’d be in your hometown.”
Staudenmaier’s promposal, posted to Twitter on Tuesday, has been retweeted more than 7,000 times and has received about 16,000 likes.
