More white Americans than not believe that President Donald Trump has delivered a solid job performance thus far. While Trump’s approval rating has sunk in various polls, The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that Trump is treading above water with white voters.
A majority of white Americans, 53 percent, approve the job Trump is doing, according to the poll. White Americans without a college degree are even more bullish on the president, with 58 percent approve of the work he has done.
This positivity counters the overall electorate, as 58 percent of Americans indicated that they disapprove of his performance. The AP poll was conducted in the midst of the collapse of the GOP health care overhaul.
By comparison, a Gallup poll at this point in the Barack Obama presidency found that the 44th president had 60 percent approval rating.
While Trump was not the most popular candidate in presidential history, it appears he has lost some support in the first two months of his term in office.
In the 2016 presidential election, election polls suggested that 63 percent of white men voted for Trump, as opposed to 31 percent for Hillary Clinton. A majority of white women, an astonishing 53 percent, also voted for Trump. Among college educated whites, only 39 percent of men and 52 percent of women voted for Clinton.
Nevertheless, Trump’s base — mostly made up of white men — are sticking with their guy. Despite his harsh defeats, from the failed travel ban to the failed Obamacare repeal, Trump can still govern at the moment because his fans still adore him.
