Five things to know about 49ers LB Reuben Foster

The 49ers took Alabama linebacker Reuben Foster with the No. 31 overall selection Thursday in the NFL Draft. Here are five things to know about him:

1. He had a hard time deciding on a college, originally committing to Alabama before switching to Auburn and then back to Alabama.

2. Was a five-star recruit out of Auburn (Ala.) High School, who Scout.com rated as the No. 1 inside linebacker in the country.

3. Foster’s commitment to Auburn was serious enough that he had an Auburn logo tattooed on his arm, although he later turned that into a tribute into his cousin Ladarious Phillips, a former Auburn fullback who was shot and killed shortly after Foster committed to Alabama. The tattoo was so talked about that even President Obama mentioned it during the Crimson Tide’s 2013 White House visit.

4. He was a unanimous first-team All-American, the winner of the Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker and the MVP of the SEC championship game during his senior year. Asked Thursday night to describe his style in one word, Foster replied: “Savage.”

5. Foster’s father, Danny Foster, allegedly shot Inita Berry Paige while she was holding their then-19-month-old son Reuben in 1996. Both survived and Danny Foster was arrested, although he later escaped jail before being caught after 16 years as a fugitive. He’s back in jail through at least July 2035.
