Giants’ Madison Bumgarner injured in dirt bike accident, placed on DL

DENVER – Giants left-hander Madison Bumgarner sustained a sprained left shoulder and bruised ribs after being involved a dirt bike accident on the team’s day off in Colorado on Thursday, the club said.

The team put Bumgarner on the 10-day disabled list, but he is almost certain to be sidelined well beyond that – and a struggling club at the bottom of the NL West standings will be forced to absorb a crippling blow at the top of their rotation.

Bumgarner was “out of the hospital” and resting at the team hotel in Denver, according to club officials. He was diagnosed with a Grade 1 or 2 sprain of the AC joint in his left shoulder.

Bumgarner, who is 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA in four starts, will be reevaluated next week. He lands on the disabled list for the first time in his career. He has six straight seasons with at least 30 games started and 200 innings pitched, which is the second-longest active streak in baseball.
