PHOENIX – With their outfield already thinned by injuries at both the major league and Triple-A level, the Giants are nearing a deal with veteran outfielder Drew Stubbs.

Stubbs, 32, was released at the end of camp when he didn’t make the Minnesota Twins’ roster. He split last year between the Braves, Rangers and Orioles and is a .244 hitter over parts of eight seasons.

Stubbs can play center field, which is an area where the Giants already lacked depth before Denard Span’s left hip stiffened up. Span was out of Tuesday’s lineup against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, leaving Gorkys Hernandez to start and Jarrett Parker to play center if needed.

The Giants also have Mac Williamson on the 10-day disabled list with a strained quadriceps and Michael Morse still in extended spring while rehabbing a strained hamstring. Neither outfielder was ready to participate in camp games, which would be a prerequisite to joining the roster for Triple-A Sacramento.

Another center fielder in the upper minors, Stephen Duggar, is out of action because of a strained flexor muscle in his forearm. Although Justin Ruggiano can play all three outfield spots for Sacramento, Wynton Bernard is the only healthy full-time center fielder on the River Cats roster.

Stubbs was the eighth overall pick in the 2006 draft by the Cincinnati Reds, taken two spots in front of Tim Lincecum. He has always been a high strikeout guy and led the NL with 205 whiffs in 2011.
