PHOENIX – The Giants will place right-hander Hunter Strickland on the paternity list for the three-game series at San Diego that begins on Friday.
The club planned to call up a relief pitcher, with left-hander Steven Okert the obvious candidate. Okert had a terrific spring and only missed making the club to start the season because he had options and non-roster right-hander Neil Ramirez did not.
Strickland was set to return to the Bay Area on Friday to join his wife, Shelley, who is expecting the couple’s first child.
At the Giants’ Fellowship Day last year, the Stricklands shared their personal story about their difficulty starting a family, including two attempts at in-vitro fertilization.
“We’re seeing specialists and doctor after doctor for 2 ½ years,” Hunter Strickland said. “We went through IVF and it failed twice. It’s a matter of letting go and trusting, God willing, it will happen.”
