ALAMEDA — The Raiders will open the preseason schedule in Arizona for the second straight year, with a game against the Cardinals slated to kick off their exhibition season sometime between Aug. 10-14.
Despite both teams expressing a desire to reignite the series, the Raiders won’t face the 49ers in the preseason. They instead will host the Los Angeles Rams in the second week, travel to face the Dallas Cowboys for the typically-important third exhibition and wrap things up hosting the Seattle Seahawks.
The Raiders, already slated to do plenty of traveling in a season in which they’ll play one of their eight “home” games in Mexico City, could’ve been saved some wear and tear if that Cowboys game could’ve been swapped out for a quick trip down to Santa Clara. The annual series was scrapped after the 2011 season because of issues with fan violence.
Instead, the team will add a trip to Dallas (scheduled for Aug. 24-27) to a regular season slate that already sends them to Buffalo, Miami, Philadelphia, Washington and Tennessee for their non-divisional road games.
This is the third straight season the Raiders have faced the Cardinals in an exhibition. The Raiders opened their 2016 preseason slate with a 31-10 win at University of Phoenix Stadium. They last played the Rams in a 2015 exhibition when the team was still based in St. Louis. That week two game will be played between Aug. 17-21.
The preseason finale with Seattle (either Aug. 31 or Sept. 1) has become a tradition now in its 12th year. Eight of the previous 11 have been in Seattle, but this is the second straight year and third time in four seasons it’ll be played in Oakland.
