Report: Raiders top pick Gareon Conley meets police, awaits fate in rape allegation

ALAMEDA — It will be six to eight weeks before it is determined if Raiders first-round draft pick Gareon Conley will face charges on a rape allegation, according to an NFL Network report.

Conley met with Cleveland police Monday, the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported, and provided a voluntary statement and a DNA sample.

Kevin Spellacy, the lawyer for Conley, gave the six- to eight-week time frame with a county prosecutor determining whether charges are warranted.

Conley and his accuser, Spellacy told the NFL Network, had a “consensual” sexual encounter.

Inquiries to the Cleveland Police Department’s public information office received no response.

The Raiders and Conley both expressed confidence Thursday night the issue would be resolved with no charges.

“I don’t want to get into all the details about who we talked to, but the bottom line is we’ve done miles and miles of research to make sure we were comfortable with our decision,” Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie said.

Conley has no history of trouble with the law and former coaches in his home town of Massillon Ohio have vouched for his character.

Jason Hall, Conley’s head coach at Washington and now the coach at Westlake High, echoed those sentiments in an interview Sunday night.

“Knowing Gareon, the type of kid he is, when it’s all said and done, it will be a learning experience,” said Jason Hall, his high school coach at Washington and now head coach at Westlake High. “He’s the type of kid who will not put himself in that type of situation again.”

The Raiders hold their rookie minicamp this weekend, with media access on Friday.
