Saint Mary’s-Berkeley reaches into West Catholic league for new basketball coach

Saint Mary’s High School in Berkeley has hired long-time Riordan-San Francisco coach Rich Buckner to head its basketball program, Panthers’ athletic director Greg Kelly announced on Monday.

Buckner had been the Crusaders’ head coach since 2007. He won Central Coast Section championships in 2008 and 2016, and was a three-time NorCal Division III runnerup in 2008, 2013 and 2014.

But Riordan had a difficult season in 2016-17, going 8-18 overall and finishing last in the tough West Catholic Athletic League. Saint Mary’s also had a bad year, going 6-18 under Craig Battle, who chose to leave after the season.

Buckner was named CCS Coach of the Year in 2008.
