Donald Trump sees great things ahead for C.J. Beathard, whom the 49ers traded up to draft Friday.
In January 2016, the President-to-be reportedly told a crowd in Iowa that the Hawkeyes quarterback has a Hall of Fame-worthy future ahead of him.
“We’ve got the next Tom Brady right over here, the quarterback, he’s going to be the next Tom Brady,” Trump said of Beathard in January 2016, per The Gazette of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “The next Tom Brady, come on. And I know Tom, and he’s a great guy, I want to tell you.”
Three times, Trump repeated the compliment about Beathard — who, along with the rest of the team, was reportedly just off stage at Iowa Field House when the words were spoken.
Niner fans might hope Beathard does not take the comparison too seriously, considering how hard a standard that is to satisfy. After all, Brady is a four-time Super Bowl MVP and two-time NFL MVP.
(You can watch a snippet of Trump’s speech below, with the Beathard comment coming around the 30-second mark.)
Trump knew full well what he was saying, since the President is friends with the Patriots quarterback. Of course, as Niners Nation pointed out, Trump once opined that teams missed out on Johnny Manziel, so it’s not like he is known as a QB expert.
Plus, Beathard is not in the same position Brady was in as a rookie, when the latter filled in for the injured Drew Bledsoe. Two quarterbacks — Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkely — would need to go down for Beathard to be put under center by the 49ers next season.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan really likes what Beathard has to offer. But thinking the QB will become “the next Tom Brady” is a bit farfetched.
