OAKLAND — With six seconds remaining on Sunday night in Oracle Arena and the Warriors leading the Wizards 137-115, JaVale McGee got the ball in the corner and squared up for a 3-point attempt, instead of taking the impending shot clock violation.

Considering the situation (final seconds of a blowout win) and the shot-taker (a backup center), Wizards point guard Brandon Jennings felt it was disrespectful. So mid-shot, Jennings shoved McGee hard into the first row. The referees called a flagrant foul as the teams scowled at each other.

Right after McGee took his flagrant free throws and the Warriors prepared to inbound and run out the clock, Wizards coach Scott Brooks called a timeout, a clear message that he wasn’t happy. Brooks stormed off the floor after the final buzzer, giving a reluctant handshake to Steve Kerr as the Warrior coach was apparently trying to apologize.

“JaVale should not have taken a 3,” Kerr said. “When we have a lead like that, you shouldn’t be shooting a 3-pointer. I told him that and I think he understands that. I don’t have a problem taking a shot when there’s a shot clock differential. Why dribble out the clock? But I was not comfortable with the way it ended and I apologized to Scott. He wasn’t happy.”

After the game, a few Wizards players expressed displeasure.

“It was very disrespectful,” Jennings said. “Thank god he didn’t go to the rack, probably would’ve been worse for him. I think he should’ve let the clock run out. I think it was disrespectful that they were trying to get Draymond Green a triple-double and Steph (Curry) was still out there with 40.”

Said Wizards guard Bradley Beal: “That’s like a basketball rule. You don’t shoot the ball, period. Take the turnover, especially if you’re up 20 or however much you’re up. You’re not respecting the game.”

Asked about the shot attempt after the game, McGee made no apologies, actually thanking Jennings for pushing him.

“I thought I was going to make the shot, but I airballed,” McGee said. “I’m glad he pushed me, to tell you the truth. Say he didn’t push me, I would’ve airballed and it would’ve looked horrible. So shout out to Brandon Jennings.”

McGee said he wouldn’t have taken it if the shot clock was off, but because their was a difference, he has been told to not take the turnover: “Rather have a missed shot than a turnover.”

McGee’s offensive game is limited to lob plays, dunks and layups. But after practices, he regularly takes 3s.

“Because it was JaVale, people may say it was disrespectful, but JaVale actually works on that — I’m not in favor of him working on it — but he works on it every day,” Draymond Green said. “So if you got an opportunity to shoot it, shoot it.”
